The focus of this edition of Learning Naturally is developing pre-reading skills including recognition of letter sounds. Here are a couple things I would like to emphasize.
1) Encourage a love of print by surrounding your child with books and reading to him or her daily.
2) Even though identifying letters is important, recognizing the sounds that match each letter is more useful as an emerging reader.
There are numerous pre-reading activities to engage your child. See our Fun Page for more ideas. Enjoy!
Do you like watermelon? Macaroni and cheese? Lollipops? Well, so do we! The Food Alphabet is a super-delicious way to familiarize kids with beginning letter sounds. Try out this simple song book, then enjoy a snack! It's also a great springboard to discussing healthy (and some not so healthy) foods. You can try your hand at some food art, too.
